Surprises of Wrocław

Wrocław (Poland): First day with sun; Photo: Thomas Alboth

The first thing was… spring! Sun started to shine during our slide-show on International Tourism Show and didn’t stop for all the weekend. The second surprise was the girls on the streets: very different that in Warsaw or Berlin. But the coolest surprise from all were… dwarfs.

Here and there, on some square, on some window-spill, in the middle or a bit hidden – the amount of Wrocław’s dwarfs is constantly changing (all the time new ones are appearing, some are getting stolen or destroyed). But there is more than 200 of them in the all city! Sunday dwarf-tracking was the coolest activity we (with our girls on their short legs) could have ever imagined.

– Loooook, mummy! Another one! – Hanna was so excited. – And a dwarf-girl! – one by one we let her discover them. Mila wanted to hug each of them, or at least steal the ice-cream made of stone. Was a perfect motivation to walk thought the city.

Small figurines first appeared in the streets of Wrocław in 2001. The very first one was a commemorate the Orange Alternative movement placed on Świdnicka Street, where the group’s happenings used to take place. Orange Alternative (Pomarańczowa Alternatywa) was an underground protest movement, an opposition against the authoritarian communist regime that was organising peaceful protests by using absurd and nonsensical elements between 1985 and 1990.

Orange Alternative movement has inspired several other similar movements in authoritarian countries including Czechoslovakia and Hungary and it has also inspired and influenced the Pora (Ukrainian civic youth organisation) and the Orange Revolution movement in Ukraine, which was supported by Poland.

So we met the oldest one and then something like 25 more. They all have names and stories behind, which you can find on the special website. The website is in Polish, English, German, Russian, Czech and Spanish. Really really cool idea.

Aha! And about the girls! Maybe it was just a Sunday or maybe it was simply a sunny day… but all those girls in Wrocław look so pretty!! And this is, unfortunatelly, not only my point of view (Anna:).

Our first book is out!

We have published our first book (for now just in Polish:) about our Central America Trip.

    Hello:

Wroclaw looks beautiful! To be honest, we never before thought about gong to Poland, but the more we see and hear about it the more tempting it looks. Maybe it gets over-shadowed by western Europe. The dwarfs are really cool. Our boys would love hunting for them.

    Take care.
