Why not all the families are on such a trip??

Father and daughter at a family tip, Photo: Anna Sulewska

I feel so happy to be on the trip! And more and more often I’m wondering why not all the parents are packing baby to their car and leaving to discover the world together?

While sitting in Moldova, at Dniester river, those questions came to me again. I started to think and actually there is really a lot of reasons which can stop people from doing the same. Maybe we are really so lucky? Or maybe not only happy goes lucky but also lucky goes happy?

Let’s think together: why not all the people in the world decide to take a baby for such a trip?

  • because it’s not fun for them to travel (not easy for me to understand, but possible!)
  • because two of them want to travel to different places (she wants to visit Paris, he wants to check out the desert…)
  • because two of them want to travel in different way (she wants to fly, he wants to take the boat…)
  • because two of them want to travel in different time (in winter, in summer…)
  • because they think you can’t do it with a baby (=it’s too difficult)
  • because they think you shouldn’t do it with a baby (=it’s not good for a baby)

(check more below)

  • because they think you shouldn’t do it with a car (or with such a car…)
  • because they don’t have a car (too expensive, no way to get it…)
  • they (or one of them) cannot leave his/her job for half a year
  • they cannot leave their flat/house for half a year
  • they cannot leave their life for half a year (credits, parents, therapy…)
  • their health condition is not good
  • the baby’s health condition is not good
  • they don’t have friends in those countries
  • they (or one of them) care much about “things” (for example clothes – can be not easy while living in the car…)
  • they (or one of them) care much about food (sometimes cooking outside, especially with mosquitoes, is not easy…)
  • they are not used to (or maybe don’t want) to spend ALL the tile together (some believe that they wouldn’t be able to stand each other…)
  • they don’t have enough money for some “investment” expenses (health insurance, car repairs, visas…)
  • they need (and cannot get) visas to all those countries
  • their families don’t accept the idea (and it’s important for them)
  • somebody has somebody who she/he would miss too much (hmm… lover?..)
  • they don’t know languages of those countries
  • they think those countries are dangerous
  • the baby is really not made for such a trip (can it really be? that you have all attitude needed but your baby is afraid of new people, stressed in new places…? i don’t know…)

Does anybody has more good ideas for reasons?

    – they don’t want to go to THOSE countries and the ones they want to go are to expensive
    – they don’t want to be together that close for such a long time afraid they would get to know each other to good
    – they don’t want to change there life
    – they are not used to be connected to friends via internet and would feel lonely

But Anna, you already wrote so many reasons, it’s difficult to add one. Have a nice birthday and enjoy the summer!

They have a pet like dog or cat, which they can’t take for such a long trip and have dificulties with leaving it with someone else…

    Happy birthday Aniu!!

-Because they are not cool enough.
-because they are from a country where the main feeling is “why go out if we have the best already here?” without the scientific curiosity to check wether that´s true.
    – because they weren´t born in the right epoch.

Shhh, don’t give them any more reasons! That makes it easier not to go. So you should give reasons to go instead :)
Anyway my guess is that people don’t have the guts and awesomeness to do it!
    Happy belated birthday Anna!

I don’t think it matters why people would “not” do it. Why not focus on the reasons ‘why’ as opposed to ‘why not’? Also, who knows how many families do this kind of thing or not? You can’t exactly prove it with statistics. You could also ask why so many couples stop socializing with many friends when they have kids, or become tied at the hip, or feel this obligation to do everything with their mate.

And I agree with the reasons listed. Cat/ dog obligations, house etc… You guys rent an apartment, so it’s clearly easier. I’ve also rarely if ever met couples who have babies and live with roommates.
You are in a position to do this, and that’s fine. Celebrate the reasons why.. not why not.

i’ll tell you why i don’t, though i would absolutely love to: simply can’t afford to. and that involves many legitimate aspects, from living in a country that definitely doesn’t pay one to travel to not being able to afford health care insurance — and all other money things inbetween. my reasons for not not going are not what others had to say: a lack of love for living or “not cool”… though i think saying others are “not cool” is really not cool. but i’m happy you get to do it and i think your child will benefit in ways beyond what you imagine.

I think that not children are obstacle for a trip. I think that is nature of parents. If they are stay-st-home not nomad type they prefere to stay at home and watch the world through like you and yours stories. And animals can be kind a problem – try get two horses with you for a trip. Leave them for a half year? No…. I would have died of longing. So… some people are traveling (with or without children, i think it doesn’t matter) and the other horses as they love :)
    And thank you for relations.

Because they’ve got something more interesting to do. ..Only because You love to travel doesn’t mean that there’s no other passions people can have. .

I know one big reason. One of them is autistic and the other one is not good at making plans for long trip at advance cause prefer unpredictable. Trips longer than day or two will not work for any of them together…

I really like reading your blog. All about fun staff you can do or did or will do. It is really exciting as I always loved travelling and travelled a bit and still travel but definately less than I did since I have a child. I don’t really like this post tho… It sounds almost like laughing at everyone that cannot travel, whatever reason it is. It is their decisions, isn’t it? And it is not as simple as “If you want to travel you can do it, you can do anything YOU WANT”. How do you cover your everyday life costs – nursery for girls, rent, food. You work, right? So I work too and I don’t have too many needs but where I live I can’t even cover my basic costs by myself. Honestly. A little bit of understanding.

I know people travelling without ANY money. With the kids. And without having work at home. Or with disable kids even! It’s just about decisions and priorities, I believe and I share my beliefs on the blog. Yes, Im a little bit laughing at people giving to themselves different excuses. And all those points above – is a try of understanding. I think all of them make sense.
