A real monk in the real cave

Monastry Orheiul Vechi (Moldova)

Fairy place (like the picture photoshoped by Tom, heh – the original one you find inside the post): cave monastery Orheiul Vechi. The room was filled with the smell of garlic. And we met a real monk.

Orheiul Vechi is an ancient settlement situated on the left bank of the Raut river near the villages about 50 km northeast of Chisinau. Few minutes walk from the road where we left the car, few steps down by dark stairs and here we are: in the cave.

Monk Ife (however to write this name!) lives in there since 6 long years. Inside a cave, with a lovely view on the river. In the same way as monks in 12th and 13th century: sleeping on the rocks, using candles to read at night.
That is what he likes the most: – But I can concentrate on reading only when there are no tourists around, which is basically in the evenings – he even didn’t smile.

6 years-old Dumitru is also there every day, asking tourists for 1 lei.

Our first book is out!

We have published our first book (for now just in Polish:) about our Central America Trip.
See, read and order here »
